This is my opinion on why learning to program or doing IT is a great option coming from a GCSE student.

Let me ask you a question, how many computers do you think you have in your house?

No, I’m not just talking about laptops, mobile phones, and stuff like that.

Think about it computing is part of everything that we do from playing games and social media to even simple things like doing our laundry or using the microwave. They are all programmed, the computer embedded inside a washing machine allows you to just choose your desired settings and does the majority of the work.

Computer science is not only used in the field of computing but also in scientific research, health care, predictions of the weather, and potentially life-threatening natural disasters. It can also help in preventing crime or helping to control it. In many ways, more than one CS is extremely helpful to the world.

Computers are here to stay

No matter where in the world you are, there is bound to be some form of technology and that technology is ever advancing. There will always be some way to adapt it or make it more efficient, like in the way new and updated versions of phones, tablets, and laptops keep rolling out. With talks about bringing the metaverse to life, who knows where we’ll be in the future?

CS is a challenging job, however, the reward for that is better

There is an endless list of jobs that you can get from doing computing. Some examples are software engineers, database designers, game designers, game testers, software architects. It goes on. All of these jobs pay rather well, don’t believe me, an example would be an IT manager, the national average salary is £107,708 or $146,360 the lowest 25% made £83,239 or $113,110 (from a survey done in 2019).

Yes...computer science isn't for everyone. It’s a STEM-related topic and, it can be difficult to grasp.

If you like challenges and problem solving, it’s a challenge and pushes you to think both creatively and logically. It is definitely not useless, as I said it's basically in every job. Though it might be difficult, if you are willing to invest the time and effort into it, you will definitely be able to pursue a successful career in CS. Although the comfort zone may be a beautiful place to some, easy and relaxing, nothing will ever grow there. As someone once quoted “Great things never came from the comfort zone”.

I hope this little overview helps show you the wonder of taking and doing computer science if you were on the fence about it. :)
